Getting
your site FrontPage ready
To
get the FrontPage server extensions installed to your account,
just request them on Step 1 of the account ordering process.
Or, if you've already established your hosting account with
us, simply log into the Control
Panel where you can get FrontPage extensions added to
your account in the Site Toolbox area.
Creating your FrontPage 98 web site
- After
you have installed FrontPage to your workstation, open the
program from your Start, Programs menu in Windows.
- As
FrontPage is opening, you'll be presented with a Getting
Started menu. Double click on My Web if it appears in the
list or click to Start a New FrontPage Web.
- You
will now be in the FrontPage Explorer part of FrontPage 98.
Explorer is how you move around, and Editor is where you
will edit your files. (These have been combined into one
window in FrontPage 2000).
- Click
on New Page in FrontPage Explorer to start with a blank page.
- Once
the new page opens, you can start entering text or go up
to the toolbar to change the text colors, etc. just like
you can in any other MS Office application.
- Once
you have tried a few different things out, right-click anywhere
in the new page you've been working in. Choose Page Properties...
- Here
you can change the page title, that appears on the web browser's
toolbar when you view your web pages, the background color,
link colors, etc.
- If
you want to use a "theme" that was included with
the application, close out of the Properties window and open
FrontPage Explorer (from the bar at the bottom of your computer
screen that shows what applications you have open). Select
Themes view (clickable on the left-hand side of the window).
Select the theme you like best, or not one at all, and click
okay.
- Go
to the File drop down menu in FrontPage Editor when done
with the page, and choose Save As... Save your file. You
will want to save your files to the default directory that
appears under Sage As... unless you have used FrontPage before
and understand how subwebs and webs work on your PC.
- When
ready to start a new page, go to the File drop down menu
in FrontPage Editor, and select New Page. If you implemented
a theme in the earlier step, you'll notice the theme appears
automatically in the new page. If you did not, you will need
to manually configure the way the page looks.
- You
can link the pages together by going to the Navigation view
(clickable on the left-hand side of the FrontPage window)
in FrontPage Explorer and clicking on the files and dragging
and dropping them together.
- Once
you've created several pages, and are ready to practice publishing,
read the next section.
- Remember:
Practice makes perfect. Once you start to play around with
the program a lot, you'll learn about the many new and cool
things that you can add to your site, like message boards,
forms, images, links, etc.
- You
can always buy an additional book on getting started with
FrontPage if the manual does not contain enough detail.

Publishing
your FrontPage 98 web site
Once
you are done building your pages or making changes to existing
ones, you are ready to publish. The steps below are the same
steps you will take every time you need to publish your web
or make changes to it.
- Connect
to the Internet. (Do this before opening FrontPage. If FrontPage
is already open close it down, connect, then reopen it).
- If
you don't already have FrontPage Explorer open, open it,
and go to File, Open FrontPage Web to open the web site that
you would like to publish. (The web should be already saved
to your PC).
- Once
the web is open, go to File, Publish FrontPage Web. (Do not
click on the Publish button on the toolbar, it does not publish
correctly).
- Enter
in either your site's web address or IP address that were
sent to you when you signed up the account. If you know that
your domain is already active (it's propagated) then you
will likely want to enter www.[insertyourdomain.com] into
the field.
- Then
click Publish.
- As
long as your FrontPage application locates your web address
on the Internet and verifies that the FrontPage server extensions
are installed (see the "Getting your site FrontPage
ready" section on this page), you will then be prompted
for the username and password for your account.
- Enter
in both the username and password exactly as they were sent
to you. Our web servers are case sensitive.
- After
you have done this, you will see the pages start to publish
to the site. You can view the status at the lower-left hand
corner of FrontPage Explorer.
- When
the publishing is done, you can go into your web browser,
enter in your site's web address and see the web.
- If
you want to make any changes, just go back into FrontPage
Explorer/Editor, make the changes and publish again as outlined
above.
